Ammonite Delivers Technical Direction for West End Production of Othello
The Ammonite team recently served as Technical Directors for Chris Harper Productions' West End run of Shakespeare's Othello at The Royal Haymarket.
This successful project marks the second collaboration between the two companies, following their work on the 2025 UK tour of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
As Technical Directors, Ammonite managed the full scope of technical design, including the stage, props, lighting, automation, and sound. They ensured a top-tier team of industry professionals were onboard to refresh the classic Shakespearean tragedy with a modern production aesthetic.
Technical Design Highlights
The design incorporated several key features to create a dynamic and timeless production:
Set Design: The stage is framed by gold proscenium arches, creating a striking, gallery-like visual that complements the architecture of the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
Reflective Flooring: A golden, high-sheen floor acts as a versatile character throughout the performance, transforming to represent water under moonlight, a mirror for introspection, domestic tiling, or a harsh battlefield.
Automation: Set pieces and automation subtly merge contemporary technology with Shakespearean language,creating a jaw-dropping storm sequence ensuring the work resonates as a timeless piece.
Soundscape: Seamless sound design and musical direction enhance the cast's performance and deepen the narrative flow.
Versatile Backdrop: Metal curtain chains hung upstage function as a flexible set piece and screen.
